Cynder Johnson joined the Maine Hands & Voices board in the summer of 2025. She works full-time as a firefighter and advanced EMT. She is the mother of a Deaf daughter who uses both American Sign Language and spoken English. Her daughter utilizes a hearing aid and cochlear implant. Her daughter was not identified as deaf until age two and a half. Cynder and her partner relocated to midcoast Maine from Mount Desert Island so their daughter could attend the Mackworth Island Preschool. She is an advocate for immersion within the Deaf community and total access to communication for D/HH children.
