Deaven Smith has a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. She wears one hearing aid in the left ear and nothing in the right ear. She was diagnosed with a hearing loss at the age of two and got hearing aids at the age of three. She grew up as the only person with hearing loss in her family and went to a mainstream school in Brewer, Maine. She learned ASL as her first language but uses spoken language as her primary language growing up. She has an Undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and hopes to go on to get her Masters in Deaf Education/Special Education. She is currently an Educational Technician for MECDHH in Brewer.
