Jasan Matthews was born deaf to a hearing family of six children. Jasan was born third in his family, and all of his siblings have learned to sign or finger spell or "home signs" to communicate with him. He grew up on a working 550-acre dairy farm in northern Vermont. He received hearing aids as a young boy and learned Signing Exact English as a student at the Austine School for the Deaf in Vermont. When he was a teenager he began to learn American Sign Language. He attended Austine as a weekly dorm student from the age of 5, when he entered Kindergarten. As a graduate of Austine, he attended a community college for a short time in New Jersey. Jasan has a strong work ethic and has had a variety of jobs throughout his life, but holds dairy farming and Deaf Christian Ministry close to his heart. He is a happy, go with the flow kind of guy. He currently lives in northern Maine with his wife and three children. Jasan loves spending time with his family and socializing with all people.
